IMPORTANT NOTICE - PARENT BEHAVIOUR

2 Aug 2019 by Lisa Geerlings

Dear Parents and Team Officials,
At Brunswick JFC we take child safety and respect for the umpires very seriously. On the whole we believe our parents are great role models and uphold our values.

However, the YJFL have asked all clubs to share the information below, so everyone is aware of the behaviours expected and the consequences, especially as the intensity of games increases with finals pressure.

If you have any questions please contact me via info@brunswickjfc.org.au

As we move into the final stages of the season, it is apparent from the number of incidents being reported, that the behaviour of both Team Officials and Parent Spectators is moving in a direction that is less than desirable. There have been a number of interactions with umpires that are not acceptable.

Amongst the incidents reported over the past two weeks were:

- A 14 year old umpire approached after the game by a team official to complain about the free kick count
- An umpire being confronted by an aggressive parent whilst waiting for the umpire’s room to be opened
- A 16 year old umpire being confronted by a team manager as he was walking off the ground demanding his name in order to put in a formal complaint about his performance
- A Club Goal Umpire attempting to pressure a 14 year old umpire into changing his decision

This type of behaviour is unacceptable and will not be tolerated. Please communicate with all Coaches, Team Managers and Parents that they must not confront nor intimidate umpires, particularly young umpires. Team Officials are required to abide by the Code of Conduct which specifies they must develop respect for all players, and umpires. They should not be calling out any comments or questions regarding umpires – this does not develop respect for umpires amongst their players.

Any reported instances in the last 2 rounds will be referred to the Conduct Investigation Tribunal for their action.
